There isn’t many harder genres of photography than shooting the street. So how can you make things slightly easier? For me it was chasing the light. I use to walk miles, trying to find an interesting scene or group of people, or even wait on street corners for that decisive moment. Living and shooting in Calgary with its skyscrapers and tall office blocks that reflect or block the sun, I now spend a lot of my shooting time following the light from block to block. By timing when you go out and watching the sun in the sky you can continually move around the streets in such a way that sets you up for better and more interesting street shots. So next time you’re looking at your days photos shot on the streets and you’re feeling a bit let down by the results go and chase that light and transform your portfolio.
